For manufacturers trying to bring their product to market directly, bigbox retailers’ penalties and chargebacks can harm if not handicap their operation to a point of no return.

Each retail chains have their own book of rules that one has to learn before fulfilling their PO (purchase order). Here are the top 5 reasons you could infringe their strict rules and be penalized:

Late Delivery

It sounds obvious, but it’s a big deal. When choosing your logistics partner, make sure you work with somebody that specialized in online orders fulfillment, which means that has the complete operation running on a tight schedule. Careful with “logistics” companies trying to do fulfillment – they could be specialized in other type of logistics, moving bigger quantities such as freight forwarders, and their staff works at a different pace (and with rather less technology).

Early Delivery

Often when sending shipments from abroad, people tends to think that they rather ship it early than late, so they schedule their logistics with some cushions days in case something goes wrong in such a long trip. The problem with this is that when the order arrives early, bigbox retailers will charge you for “storing space” and this will not be your only charge.

Wrong Labeling

Back in the days, when preparing big orders retailers would only ask you to ship the boxes to their sorting facility and they would distribute it to their different stores. Now labeling has become a very complex operation where retailers ask you to prepa

re big orders and ship them to each of their stores, with a specific label and indicated routing. If you don’t have the systems developed for this operation, you could lose the client and on top of that have to pay fees.

Use of tape

You could also be charged for the use of what they consider “excessive” tape. If they understand that removing the packaging material occupies their staff longer than needed, you will penalized for it. Again, it’s important that you partner with a fulfillment partner that know the drill with each retailer.

Handling Charges

This is a big one that you need to contest before signing your agreement with them: many times they hide this clause which basically says that they can charge you for anything they consider that causes them extra work. Ask them to remove this or to be more specific, otherwise you will never know how much of your sells they will keep and how much you will get to take home.

At Ameriworld we deal with all major and specialty retailers on a daily basis and we are in very good standing with them all. If you are looking for a fulfillment partner in South Florida, don’t hesitate to contact Ameriworld Fulfillment Services in Miami.
